If you’re experiencing hyperpigmentation on your skin with little excitement over your results from spot treatments and skincare, then it might be time to consider laser treatments as a sun spot treatment. There are various laser options available for different types of hyperpigmentation and skin tones, and we’re proud to offer these options at Coco Med Spa.
Types of sunspots and hyperpigmentation
Hyperpigmentation is an umbrella term for many types of dark spots and discoloration that form on the skin. For example, all sunspots are hyperpigmentation, but not all hyperpigmentation are sunspots, if that makes sense. Hyperpigmentation can be the result of sun damage, hormonal changes, or physical damage to the skin, such as acne, burns, or other injury. Hyperpigmentation often looks like light or dark brown spots, but can also appear black, gray, red, or pink. BBL HEROic for sun spots
One sun spot treatment that we love to recommend, depending on skin type, is the BBL HEROic laser. When we consider which treatment is best for a client’s hyperpigmentation, we’ll look to see if there are other accompanying skin concerns to address as well. In those cases, alternative laser suggestions might be made. For clients with Fitzpatrick Type I - III skin and no other skin concerns, BBL HEROic is a powerful treatment option that will target and reduce (and possibly eliminate) hyperpigmentation like sun spots and discoloration from injury.
Moxi for melasma
For individuals with hormonal hyperpigmentation, also known as melasma, or people with textured skin concerns, Moxi is generally our preferred laser treatment. Moxi is also the best laser option for clients with deeper skin tones, but can also be used in combination with BBL HEROic to treat certain clients. Moxi is known for its “prejuvenation” ability to repair some issues before they arrive visibly on the surface of the skin.
As with all skin treatments, it’s important to remember that each person’s skin and needs are different and will require a customized approach for great results. While Moxi is a great option for some people with melasma, others may be recommended for a chemical peel instead. It’s important to manage expectations with your provider prior to service so that you understand how many laser treatments may be needed and what kind of results to anticipate. For example, in the case of hyperpigmentation, those with very visible discoloration are likely to experience transformational results. Those with less pigment and mild discoloration might need a mixed method approach, as lighter discoloration can be more difficult to target.
