Injection Misconceptions: The Truth About Preventative Botox

We’re back at it again with another installment in the series where we debunk misconceptions about different injectable treatments. Today, we’re discussing neurotoxins of all kinds again! Whether you’re a seasoned Botox client or just getting started, it's always great to have an understanding of what you can truly expect from a product or service. Have no fear, we’re here to break down the details of what “preventative” Botox really means, who it’s for, and what other things to expect.

What is preventative Botox?

Preventative botox is generally administered to someone who is only just experiencing visible fine lines and wrinkles in expressive areas that may be prone to forming deeper lines in the future. While this is typically marketed to younger individuals, it truly depends on you and where your skin is at when preventative treatment might be needed. Occasionally, you may hear the term “Baby Botox” and it is important to note that these are not the same thing.

What is “Baby Botox?”

Baby Botox is not something that we offer at Coco Med Spa as it’s generally not in the client’s best interest and tends to increase tolerance over time. This means that you’ll eventually require more and more product for the desired effect. Baby Botox requires you to come in more frequently than necessary at a smaller dose. Truthfully, younger clients who wish to get ahead of fine lines and wrinkles with neurotoxin treatments should receive a standard treatment as directed by an experienced and qualified injector and allow it to completely wear off before returning for more. In the words of our co-founder and Nurse injector Amy Nguyen, APRN, “you look good, stay away!” Humor aside, depending on the person, 1-3 visits a year is a perfectly acceptable expectation.

When should I start Botox?

Unfortunately, there are no one size fits all specifics on when to start treatment with neurotoxins. Why? Because genetics, anatomy, sun exposure, skin regimen, and expression levels all affect your skin’s appearance and the timeline in which you might start to notice expression lines. If you’ve already got deeper, etched-in lines that are visible at rest, you can start reparative treatments every 3 months to help soften and eventually smooth the areas. The beauty of our consultation services is that you can come in, be evaluated, ask all of your questions, and together, we’ll create a treatment plan that is perfectly tailored to you!
