When it comes to injectables, we’re constantly providing education to combat misinformation and make sure our clients have the best understanding of what to expect from their injectable services. As a result, we started a series to discuss common questions and misinformation and we’re back with another one! In this installment of Injection Misconceptions, the topic is lip lines. Can lip lines be fixed with filler? Keep reading to find out.
The truth about lip lines
If you’ve done any looking into it, it’s no secret that lip lines, also known as smoker’s lines, are one of the harder symptoms of aging to eliminate. Generally, this is not addressed with filler. A typical filler application in the areas around the lips is not an option, as many assume, because this is not an appropriate place on the face to add volume. There are, however, a few ways to address it that will help improve the appearance for a smoother, more youthful look around the lips.
How are lip lines best treated?
There are a few methods by which lip lines can be treated and improved. Although it is not a typical filler application, there is a method called “ferning” that uses microdroplets of filler injected into the surrounding areas of the lips. However, this treatment doesn’t always provide full correction and is only recommended on a case-by-case basis.
PRF injections and laser treatments are often recommended for this area as these treatments tend to promote the production of new collagen resulting in thicker skin, which helps to soften the lines. Another case-by-case treatment in some circumstances is lip injections. In some cases, surrounding lip lines can be smoothed or softened by adding volume to the lip itself.
The real key to avoiding lip lines
Although the above treatments do address and improve the appearance of lip lines, they require regular maintenance and are not guaranteed to eliminate them. In the case of lip lines, the best treatment is prevention. Things like regular skin care with SPF and retinoids, not smoking, avoiding pursing your lips around, and staying out of the sun are great places to start. Services like Botox to prevent pursing the lips, also known as lip flips, can help as well. Staying aware of your face at rest and addressing improper teeth position can help as well as these are also common causes of lip lines.
At Coco Med Spa, we pride ourselves in having realistic conversations with our clients about prevention vs. treatment, and what to expect when treating a difficult area.
