Injection Misconceptions: Can Cheek Filler Lift Your Face?

We’re back again, answering some of your most common questions about injectable treatments, and today the focus is cheek filler. A frequently mentioned misconception is about the role that cheek fillers play in lifting and sculpting the face. Keep reading for all the “need to know” info before your next filler appointment.

Can cheek filler lift the face?

The short answer? No. The purpose of cheek filler is to add volume back into the cheeks when volume loss has occurred due to factors like aging and fat loss. At Coco Med Spa, we are pretty conservative with our approach to cheek filler and always administer it with your best interest in mind, even if it means that we skip it or apply less than the client thinks they want.

Our cheek filler method

Amy Nguyen, co-owner and APRN injector, shares that she will turn clients away from a cheek filler service until a true volume deficit is present in the cheek area. What does this mean? As we age, the fat pads in our cheeks begin to separate. During this process, people begin to notice a loss in volume in the cheek area and may become candidates for cheek filler. Generally, this is not needed until at least the 30’s. When the time is appropriate, 3-4 syringes may be used to build back lost volume in the cheeks to create a more defined, convex appearance. Luckily, this treatment lasts for quite a long time and we don’t allow clients to overdo it at Coco Med Spa. Amy’s favorite advice is, “if you look good, leave it alone!”

Why can’t cheek filler be used for lifting?

The easiest explanation is that cheek filler adds volume but it cannot pull skin up. The fillers we use, Restylane Lyft or Restylane Contour are not viscous enough to create a holding lift nor does the treatment function that way. The truth? If enough filler has been injected into the cheek area to lift the skin, your injector has overdone it. Not only can this create the dreaded “pillow face” look, but it can also make hollowing in the temples look worse and it can impede proper lymphatic drainage in the face which is an integral part of your health and wellness.

At the end of the day, cheek filler’s correct use is to enhance the face, not to augment it. As with any filler treatment, it is always best to consult with an experienced aesthetic injector like our experts at Coco Med Spa.
