Microdermabrasion vs. Microneedling: Which One Is Best?

Updated: Apr 5, 2022

Two highly popular skincare treatments that you may see mentioned often are Microdermabrasion and Microneedling. But, what are they really? Should you pick one? Do you need both? Today we will detail the processes, benefits, differences, and best-suited skin types for each of these treatments to answer all of your questions and help you choose the best service for your skin’s needs.

What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is perfect for clients who are looking for a deep, manual exfoliation. It is offered in combination with our skincare facials and is performed by applying finely ground crystals to exfoliate the first layer of skin on the face. Next, our medical-grade tools suction and remove impurities from the face. The end result will provide your skin with a smooth, brightened appearance. Common microdermabrasion benefits includes reduced appearance of visible sun damage, clogged pores, and surface blemishes.

What is Microneedling?

At Coco Med Spa we use the SkinPen®. It is an FDA-approved Microneedling tool that uses very fine needles to superficially pierce the skin. These controlled micro-injuries to the skin switch on your skin’s healing system which promotes the stimulation of collagen and elastin in problem areas such as acne scars, fine lines, and pigmentation. New, healthy skin forms and over time reduces the appearance of fine lines, deep wrinkles, and texture concerns.

Which is more effective?

Both treatments are equally effective for the issues that they address. If surface issues and exfoliation are your concern, Microdermabrasion is excellent for resurfacing and replenishing a youthful glow. If deeper texture and damaged skin is your concern, Microneedling is a wonderful treatment to renew and repair your skin.

Can I do both?

Many people can benefit from receiving both treatments. Depending on your skin’s needs and sensitivity, you may need to receive the services in separate appointments. The experts at Coco Med Spa are more than happy to consult with you and come up with a treatment plan that will give you results without compromising the integrity of your skin and its healing process. We pride ourselves in offering safe and comprehensive care and remaining a leading provider of safe skincare treatments in St. Pete. In general, each service requires about 3-6 treatments for optimal results. Because Microdermabrasion works on the skin’s surface, you will see results more quickly than with Microneedling. This is because Microneedling works with deeper layers of skin and the formation of new skin and production of collagen and elastin can take several weeks to a few months.

What about at home dermarolling?

We recommend that individuals seek the care of a professional for all invasive, yes, even minimally invasive, procedures. Store-bought dermarollers often have needles that are far too large to guarantee your skin’s safety and can actually create scarring and infection if not performed and cleaned properly. Your skin is irreplaceable and is best kept in the hands of professionals who can guide you towards your best result and recommend safer at-home alternatives.

We would love to have you visit us at Coco Med Spa. Feel free to contact us with any questions or to book your appointment today!
